Gratitude, Inspiration & The Importance Of Paying It Forward
June 14, 2013
There are times in life that cause us to reflect on the lessons we have learned and the dreams we have chosen to pursue. It is Shark Tank casting season once again, a time where hopeful entrepreneurs are preparing their beloved businesses for an introduction to the sharks and the show’s 7 million viewers. It is hard for me to believe that a full year has passed since I was in that position. I have had the opportunity to connect with several people in various phases of the casting process, an experience that has reminded me of the wonderful fortune I have found in being selected for the show. While I still feel like I am in the early phases of my entrepreneurial journey, I am reminded of just how far I have come. I am certain I lack more answers than I posses, though have finally reached a place where I have learned to trust my own instinct and judgement.
When I began developing my first four products in 2010, I reached out to several successful women who founded companies I admired. I sought advice and encouragement though didn’t receive a response from most. The one woman I shared an interaction with was cold towards me and very secretive, the polar opposite of what I had hoped for and expected. Clearly life went on for me, though I vowed to be more supportive in the event I was fortunate enough to find success. While my initial willingness to make time for others stemmed from my commitments to giving more than I had received, I have since realized that I have been personally fulfilled by making time for others. Those interactions have birthed new friendships with like-minded and inspiring people. The opportunity to offer advice has helped me realize just how far I have come and revealed lessons I didn’t realize I had learned. It has also helped me feel connected to others, as anyone who works for themselves (and/or from home) can probably relate to the occasional loneliness such a unique position presents. Giving to others provides an opportunity to grow and connect.
Anyone who knows me even a little bit can attest to the fact that I am one of the biggest Oribe fans the world has ever known. The man is a creative genius; he is a hairstylist responsible for iconic looks over the past few decades. He has worked with high profile fashion designers, models, actresses, and makes regular women feel like bombshells. I have heard other describe him as the “Elvis of hair” and think the title suits perfectly. He is charming, charismatic, and oozes with talent. He is the front man for what I believe to be the best haircare brand in the world, appropriately named Oribe. Once a year this fantastic company invites their salon partners for a weekend of inspiration, Backstage as they call it. This year the event was held in Miami and I was fortunate enough to attend. While my goal was to educate myself on the salon industry, I left feeling encouraged, excited, and empowered. A stylist had warned me that my career will never be the same after attending; boy was he right!
Spending several days in the presence of the best hairstylists and salon owners in the world reminded me of the amazing opportunity I have been given. From a business perspective, I often view the task of orienting an entire industry to my little brand as an overwhelming and impossible project. My time in Miami, however, reminded me that this industry is full of amazing people who are seeking the next big trend. Years ago, I pursued a career in social work because I wanted to connect with others. Meeting such a passionate group reminded me that running a business has more similarities to social work than I originally realized. In the end, both are all about people. While I felt very nervous in an environment where I didn’t know many, I was welcomed and embraced quickly. I heard lots of positive feedback about my concept, products, and brand in addition to some honest criticism. The criticism was (seriously) appreciated, as it provides an opportunity to reassess certain aspects of my business. I returned home and immediately began working to improve on certain things and can’t wait to show those who made suggestions that I really do listen
Shark Tank casting and Oribe’s Backstage event have reminded me that we all have an equal opportunity to give and receive. Both are fulfilling experiences and help us become bigger, better, stronger, faster and more self-aware. I am overwhelmed with feelings of gratitude and inspiration as I’m reminded of how far I’ve come what can be achieved. I can’t wait to see what the future holds
Shark Tank: How I Got There & Where I’m Going Now
May 24, 2013I am often asked about my experience on ABC’s Shark Tank and have meaning to share details for a while. It feels a bit odd to find myself talking about a personal experience on reality TV, as I never imagined my path would lead me to this unique place. However, I am so deeply grateful for the opportunity and wouldn’t trade the experience for anything.
I saw Shark Tank for the first time in February 2012 and loved the show from the beginning. As an ambitious mompreneur, I was thrilled to see others who shared my dream of building a successful company. I related to the contestants and was excited to have found a program that offered real-world lessons for people like me. After the episode was over, my husband casually stated that I should go on the show. As crazy as it sounds, I just felt like I would.
Over the next few months, Shark Tank seemed to be everywhere in my world. Multiple people in my business travels repeatedly suggested that I should try to get on the show. I filled out an online application but didn’t receive a response. A few weeks later, my company filled a large purchase order and had a bit of extra cash on hand. I decided to try my luck with a PR representative who specialized in children’s products, though my budget was limited and I could barely afford her. I explained that I could only pay her for three months and hoped that something good would come along to further my brand’s position. A week before our time together was over, I reminded her that I didn’t have the money to pay her for the following month. She sweetly encouraged me that my products were good and asked if I had ever considered applying for Shark Tank. I explained that I loved the show but reminded her that the chances of getting cast for something like that for a regular person like me (little sales and a big dream) was slim to none. She called me back less than 24 hours later: A Shark Tank producer had randomly contacted her looking for interesting baby and children’s products. As very good luck may have it, she suggested Hot Tot!
The casting process moved very quickly. I submitted a short video so network executives could assess my camera presence and also filled out hundreds of pages of paperwork. After receiving confirmation that I would present my line in LA I was paired with a team of producers so my pitch could be perfected. Though most of what is seen on Shark Tank is unscripted, the opening piece is something that is rehearsed to ensure that the required information is presented quickly and clearly. I really struggled with this part of the process, as I am not an actress by any means. Authenticity is very important to me and I worried that my discomfort would cause me to come across as unlikable or unprepared. I reminded myself not to obsess about things beyond my control, however, and committed to doing the best that I could.
I don’t remember much of my actual Shark Tank taping, as my nerves were in full force. I was terrified, afraid that I would destroy my brand, discredit my concept, or embarrass my loved ones. I have always considered Hot Tot to be my baby; like any good mother, I wanted to protect it at all cost. I did my best to keep calm to ensure that my three year old son cooperated since he was an important part of my pitch (toddlers can be unpredictable). I was relieved as he willingly walked down the hallway. The first few minutes in the tank were rocky. I was so nervous that my hands would hardly work as I attempted to style my son’s hair. If you watch my footage closely, you can actually see them trembling. I eventually found my stride but can honestly say that I never felt completely comfortable. I stood in the tank for nearly two hours though my footage was edited down to about seven minutes. I believe my final edit was a good representation of my actual experience. However, Robert did a lot more talking that viewers may realize, as his neighbor built and sold a well-known hair product line and he was very knowledgeable about my industry. The sharks were just like you see on TV: Mr. Wonderful was cynical and sharp (not mean, just savvy), Robert was kind, and Mark’s offer came out of nowhere.
Shark Tank provided a wonderful opportunity to show that there was a lot of science and expertise behind my products. Prior to appearing on the program, many assumed that I was a mom who had whipped up a batch of homemade hair gel in my kitchen sink (this was never the case). I work with the best team of formulators and clinical consultants in the beauty industry and was knowledgeable about common toxins used in children’s products and their affects on a growing body. My deal with Mark Cuban closed within about six weeks of taping and his investment funds were immediately used to pay for a series of intense clinical tests from a third party lab. The testing verified that the products were mild and gentle and allowed us to market the entire Hot Tot line as hypoallergenic. It also concluded that the products were gluten and soy free and that the wet line (Spotless Tot, Shampoo & Conditioner) is ultra-mild on the eyes. We have since earned the approval of animal rights organizations like PETA and The Leaping Bunny and are now certified as a cruelty free cosmetic company. Slowly but surely, Hot Tot is growing up!
So what’s next? Robert Herjavec was correct in his assessment that I had a long road ahead. I remain hopeful and optimistic that Hot Tot will eventually become a mainstream and recognizable brand, as I truly believe that we offer the very best professional hair products for kids on the market. I remind myself that Rome wasn’t built in a day. As one lovely customer so perfectly advised, “just keep swimming”. That I will

Happy Birthday Hot Tot!
April 15, 2012Today marks the close of Hot Tot’s first official year in business. My very first blog entry compared the birth of my company with that of a child, so I thought it would be fitting to carry on with that theme as I reflected back on the first year:
The first year has included many sleepless nights, as a new business (much like an infant) requires a lot more work than many might anticipate. I worried what the future may bring, and second guessed many of my choices early on. Should I have done things differently? What if my current decisions cause harm in the future? I began to find my footing, however, and slowly started to feel more confident in my own abilities and ideas. After a while, I found my rhythm (as all new moms do).
While my journey is still very new, I have learned a few valuable lessons in the past year that I thought I’d share:
1. Most people are lovely and respond to authenticity. I have been overwhelmed with support and kindness from so many people and think that women, moms in particular, truly want to see other women succeed. I will not forget these wonderful people and will pay it forward if ever I am in a position to help someone else. I promise
2. A few people are nasty- there is nothing that can be done about that. Sales are tough and selling a product line that nobody has heard of makes things increasingly difficult. While most people have indeed developed some manners, there are those who are just plain rude. I have found peace in this knowledge throughout the past year, though I have had my feelings hurt on occasion (I know- I’m such a girl; this may be the ever-present social worker in me). Early on, I felt like their bad behavior might have something to do with my products, brand or approach. I have learned, however, that these people are negative and that doesn’t have anything to do with anyone but them. I strongly advise anyone who has encountered these kind of people to carry on and use these difficult experiences as an opportunity to persevere. That which doesn’t kill us….
3. If what you’re doing isn’t working, then do something different. While this sounds ridiculously basic, I have noticed that some of my best ideas have come as a result of some of my lesser ones. My first round of products were good, though I listened acutely to every piece of feedback provided by anyone who had ever used them (moms and hair stylists in particular). We reworked the formulas with our move to the U.S. (so glad to be an American company!) and though it was stressful, the result was worth it. I’m sure I will continue this process of trial and error for the rest of my life
Thank you to everyone who has helped me reach this point. I am so sincerely appreciative
Thank you to my husband for pushing me to pursue this. I can honestly say I never would have done it on my own because I was blinded by fear (still see myself as a social worker and not a business woman). I am having a blast and have found passion and deep satisfaction in creating Hot Tot and helping it find success.
I am truly enjoying my journey, and while it’s impossible not to dream about the destination (i.e. walking into Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Bergdorf Goodman, Barneys, Saks Fifth Avenue, etc. and seeing my products displayed beautifully!), I promise to enjoy the small successes along the way.

New Study Finds Phthalates May Contribute To Child Obesity
January 30, 2012Researchers from the Children’s Environmental Health Center at The Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York have found an association between exposure to phthalates and obesity in young children. Phthalates are found in a variety of consumer products including plastics, cleaning materials, personal care products, and toys. Their primary purpose is to improve flexibility and aid in the presentation of fragrance in cosmetics.
Children’s bodies grow and develop more rapidly than those of adults, so harmful chemicals can do the most damage at this critical time. Biological immaturity impairs a child’s ability to detoxify and excrete chemicals making them far more vulnerable to dangerous ingredients than adults.
Hot Tot knows that safety need not be compromised to achieve great style and our products are phthalate free. We encourage parents to learn all that they can so they choose the best products for their babies and children and have included a link to this important piece of research in addition to more information about phthalates on our website.

December 23, 2011Choosing The Right Products For Little Ones
December 21, 2011I recently had the pleasure of writing an article for A Mother World, an online lifestyle and parenting magazine for moms, supermoms, and everything in between. In the past two years, I have become very passionate about the importance of safe products that are suitable for children. I have had so many new and exciting opportunities this experience was truly enjoyable. I hope you find it informative
Good moms want the best for their children. We make sure they eat nutritious food, get a good education, and wear clothing that is stylish and protective from the elements. With so much recent discussion about the safety of certain children’s products, many moms are feeling a bit confused.
Here is a brief explanation as to why children require specialized products. I hope you find it useful when determining which products to use on your precious little ones.
Hair Type
Like every other part of the human body, hair has different stages of development spanning from birth to death. Children’s hair differs from adults in texture, density, body, and color. Infant hair is soft and downy. In the first few months of life, this fluffy hair gradually falls out and is replaced with fuller follicles that often grow in a pattern.
As babies become children, their hair often darkens as more pigment is produced. Children’s hair traits change over time as they physically develop and age, though it is typically very fine until they reach ages 7-10 years old.
Delicate Skin
Sebum is a waxy ester that keeps skin moist and provides a protective coating to hair strands. During childhood this process is subdued as a result of lower hormone levels. Sebum production increases during puberty, building up every two to three days for the average adult. Build-up is often the cause of oily hair, which can be resolved by simply washing it away.
Children do not require daily washing because sebum is not at peak production. Daily washing, however, won’t hurt anything as believed by some. It is important to be very gentle when washing children’s hair, as the soft spot can be delicate until the age of five.
Chemical Exposure
Today, 1 in 3 American children has allergies, asthma, ADHD or autism. Children’s bodies grow and develop more rapidly than adult’s so harmful chemicals can do the most damage at this critical time. Biological immaturity impairs a child’s ability to detoxify and excrete toxins, making them far more vulnerable to dangerous ingredients than adults.
Marketing claims can be quite misleading. Children’s personal care products and their labels often possess blatant contradictions. Despite declarations of being “pure” and/or “gentle” the Environmental Working Group suggested that 57% of the top selling baby soaps were contaminated with 1,4-dioxane.
A separate study conducted by the Campaign For Safe Cosmetics suggested that 82% of the top selling children’s products contained formaldehyde. While both of these toxic ingredients are exempt from American labeling laws, chemicals of equal concern can easily be recognized if consumers know what to look for.

A “Hot Tot” was defined to encompass the various elements of beauty. We want kids to grow up knowing that confidence, kindness, generosity and global-awareness are critical components of a beautiful person. While something as simple as hair gel won’t change the world, a generation of confident and caring children certainly can

November 18, 2011“Racked obsesses about retail and shopping- from sidewalks to catwalks- in the country’s most influential fashion centers. Our editors take particular pleasure in being first in line, whether the story is a hot sample sale, a flagship store opening, or a burgeoning retail trend. In New York City since 2007, Racked opened in Los Angeles in ’08. This winter we broadened our scope with Racked National, a site dedicated to online sales, celebrity fashion, and national retail.” (http://curbednetwork.com/titles/racked)

Huffington Post Features Story About Dangerous Chemicals In Common Baby Products
November 2, 2011I was so excited to see this story featured in yesterday’s Huffington Post, as it was this very information that inspired me to formulate Hot Tot with safe and effective ingredients. I hope that parents empower themselves with information and make well-informed decisions regarding the personal care products they use daily on their children. Products from the Hot Tot line do not contain formaldehyde or 1,4-dioxane yet perform very well. Effective products can be healthy. Healthy products can be stylish and look beautiful on a shelf. Earnshaw’s Says Hot Tot is “Hot, Hot, Hot”!
October 24, 2011A Little Muse & One Very Hot Tot
October 21, 2011Since launching the Hot Tot line, I have had the privilege of working with a lot of women that have turned motherhood into a business. From bloggers, to marketing gurus, I am continuously amazed by the talent possessed by so many moms. Furthermore, these women are able to do amazing professional things and still put dinner on the table for their families. I am truly impressed!
A while ago, I learned of Annemarie Lawless, a photographer and New York City Mama. Her blog, A Little Muse, blends her talent and passion for photography with her love for her daughter Tallulah. It includes photos and short beautifully artistic films set to music. There is an innocence in her work (her daughter seems so sweet), yet the cool factor is undeniable. Annemarie’s latest post, “C is for cool 60′s retro… and cars” showcases Tallulah out in NYC rocking Stella McCartney Kids and Hot Tot Styling Gel. Swoon! As a fashion loving mama, what else could there possibly be?!?
If you haven’t already, I would highly encourage you to visit A Little Muse (.com). Thanks to Annemarie for using (and loving) Hot Tot’s Styling Gel for children and for including us on your amazing site.

Hot Tot and Founder Megan Gage Featured by The Little Style File
October 20, 2011The Little Style File is a lifestyle site for moms and kids created to provide stylish inspirations. I am always honored when a style blog features Hot Tot and was beyond excited when The Little Style File asked me to create a hair how-to to accompany their review of my line.
Like so many moms, I was always a little overwhelmed by my daughter’s hair. Keeping it out of her eyes was an ever-present task. Like so many kids, she was far too busy to sit for long periods of time. My “mommy pride” wouldn’t allow me to let her run around like a little rag doll so little by little, I learned how to do a few easy styles. The look demonstrated in my hair how-to was learned in a gas station bathroom (true story), as I quickly asked the mom in front of me (there was a line) how she had tied such a neat knot in her daughter’s hair. Two other women in the bathroom quickly began paying attention to the impromptu lesson and I made a mental note that lots of moms would love to learn a few easy ways to style their kid’s hair if given the opportunity.
Over the years, I learned other styles that I was capable of doing. Like most moms, I am not a hair stylist. Like most moms, I wanted my beautiful child to look like they were loved
I really enjoyed the opportunity to pass on something that was taught to me and hope that other women will give the featured style a try. Remember, practice makes perfect! I have come a long way since that afternoon in the bathroom and think my progression is the perfect illustration that anyone can learn to style kid’s hair if they practice. Now my daughter is 11 and learning to fix her own hair (quite well, I may add). I miss the days of her sitting in the bathroom sink (I used to let the water trickle over her toes so she would remain occupied and sit still). I now realize that the time we spent was quality time. We would talk and I would tell her how smart, special and beautiful she was. The time we spent verified those things in her little mind and she always knew that she was loved.
Hot Tot is intended to help kids develop a positive self-image from the time they’re small. While I take great pride in each of the healthy and specialized formulas, I also understand that their use requires parents to spend a few uninterrupted minutes with their child and/or children. In today’s busy world, that can be really difficult. The time it takes to smooth a ponytail can remind a child that they are loved, valued, and worthy. In my opinion, that is more important than anything in the world. Confident children grow up to do amazing things!
A special thanks to the Mundle family for allowing me to use their beautiful daughter Ashley for this piece.

Hot Tot Adds Finishing Mist To Their Styling Line For Trendy Tikes
Denver, CO- October 11, 2011- Hot Tot produces salon-quality hair styling products for babies and children without the use of harsh or harmful chemicals. Formulated with little ones in mind, the line combines high performance products with the assurance of safe and organic ingredients. Launched less than six short months ago, Hot Tot is quickly gaining popularity among posh parents and their trendy tikes.
After receiving rave reviews on the four original products in the line, founder Megan Gage was back in the lab developing a hair spray created specifically for children. “This was a unique task, as I knew we needed to come up with a formula that was gentle enough to easily wash out [of children’s fine hair] yet produce something that worked well. Kids are busy little people. Why not enable them to [safely] look stylish while having all of the fun they’re meant to have?”
Hot Tot’s Finishing Mist is unlike any other hair spray on the market. Lightly scented with Hot Tot’s signature scent (inspired by the smell of a baby doll Gage possessed as a child), it smells like mixture of marshmallows and a hint of baby powder. Delightful. Upon first glance, you may not realize that this product was created for children. The sleek silver and white packaging looks beautiful on a shelf- there is nothing cutesy about Hot Tot. The non-aerosol formula offers strong, buildable hold with flexible movement. Never sticky, stiff or flaky, Hot Tot’s Finishing Mist keeps children’s hair in place and looking great all day long. The formula contains gentle ingredients such as Vitamin B-5, added to protect hair’s natural moisture, and Organic Japanese Green Tea.
America’s obsession with celebrity children has provided a perfect opportunity for the Hot Tot line. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) concluded that the cancer-causing ingredients found in personal care products are typically 10 times more potent for babies than adults, while some are up to 65 times more powerful (EPA 2005). A recent study found numerous carcinogens in more than half of the baby products tested. Additionally, some harmful ingredients are not even required to be listed on the label. Hot Tot enables parents to safely duplicate the stylish looks of celebrity babies without worrying about the impact of harsh ingredients.
Hot Tot is available at http://www.hottot.com and upscale children’s boutiques and salons.

Hot Tot Receives Great Review from Denver Mile High Mama
July 12, 2011Hot Tot Haircare Reviewed by Trendy Mommies
July 8, 2011Fostering Independence in Children
July 5, 2011As I celebrated the Fourth of July with my family, I began thinking about the importance of fostering independence in children. Dependence on others is normal in early phases of development. Youngsters depend on their caregivers to provide food, shelter and love. From a very young age, however, children are capable of doing small things for themselves:
Babies can learn to self-sooth. Toddlers can decide what they’d like to have for lunch. Below are a few tips to help foster independence in your Hot Tot. Enjoy!
* Provide age-appropriate supervision of a child’s play
* Encourage independent decision-making for age-appropriate tasks (food, clothing, activities, friends)
* Be supportive when a child has demonstrated responsibility (“Great job on cleaning your room!”)
* Expose your child to new situations with enough support to promote success
* Honor your child’s decisions when possible (trust me, I know how difficult this can be when it comes to choosing clothes)
* Help your child set achievable goals and work towards achieving them
* Teach your child that mistakes are opportunities to learn
* Assure your child that they are loved daily

I strive to be a person who lives in the moment, as I understand that each day is a gift. Like so many people, I have spent many years of my life focusing on things to come: “I will be finished with graduate school next year”, “Only six more months of diapers”, “Finally, a vacation in six more weeks”, “Five more pounds to go”… In the recent years, I have made a conscious effort to be aware of the wonderful elements that each day consists of, as I realize that I wished away many happy times in years past. This new mindset has been very helpful, as I am fully aware of the happiness and rich blessings in my life. In regards to my son, however, it is a bit difficult to see my precious baby quickly becoming a little boy. Make no mistake, I love watching him grow and develop. However, I also love him as a baby. He is my baby
Birthdays can be bitter sweet. Today, I am reminded of the happiness my son has brought into my family. I look back with fond memories, and am grateful that God has given us this child. I am sad to see some of my favorite things about babies fading into the past (soft skin, first smiles, quiet feedings, baby breath, watching the people I love get acquainted, etc. etc. etc. [I really could go on forever]). I look forward to the future, and love seeing him learn and do new things. I am hopeful that his future is full of health and happiness

Trendwatch: Posh Parents with Hot Tots
Denver, CO- May 28, 2011- Looking great is a lifestyle. Stylish people live in chic homes, drive fabulous cars, and appreciate beautiful things. Parenthood is a wonderful time for so many, though it can present a few challenges in an organized and coordinated life. The solution? A Hot Tot.
Hot Tot produces salon quality hair styling products for babies and children. The line omits any chemical that has been proven harmful to humans, as safety need not compromise style. Hot Tot promotes a holistic view of beauty, and believes that inner goodness is of equal importance to outward appearance. Hot Tot donates a sizable portion of its proceeds to charities that benefit children and also employs eco-friendly business practices.
The Hot Tot line consists of six products. Structure Whip is a workable cream that adds texture and flexible hold; it is the perfect tool for trendy tots with fabulous faux-hawks. Styling Gel aids kids with curls in taming the frizz without ever feeling sticky or stiff. Styles remain intact with Hot Tot Finishing Mist. The entire line contains Hot Tot’s lovely signature scent and is safe for use on children with sensitive skin.
While many parents try to emulate the hairstyles of celebrity children, they should know that products made for adults are not suitable for use on their youngsters. Today, 1 in 3 American children has allergies, ADHD, autism or asthma. Children’s bodies grow and develop more rapidly than those of adults so harmful chemicals can do maximum damage at this critical time. Biological immaturity impairs a child’s ability to detoxify and excrete chemicals, making them far more vulnerable to dangerous ingredients than adults.
A Hot Tot is defined as a “confident and stylish youngster who gives to their neighbor and cares for our planet”. A Hot Tot is the perfect accessory for posh parents, and gives their children a chance to be stylish from the start. Hot Tot is available at http://www.hottot.com and at upscale children’s boutiques and salons.

Hot Tot a “Featured Product” by Natalie Tysdal
May 17, 2011A few weeks ago I was contacted by Natalie Tysdal (a fantastic television personality) about Hot Tot. Knowing that she is a mom of three, I sent her products from the line to use on her children. She liked them so much that she decided to feature Hot Tot on her her TV show and her blog. I admire Natalie’s passion for helping children. She spends a great deal of her time in the community volunteering and speaking to charitable groups. She is a living example of Hot Tot’s definition of beauty (confidence, style, charitable giving, and an awareness for our planet) and I commend her for her efforts. We really appreciate her kindness and support

Polyethylene Glycol
I recently stopped by a few children’s salons to drop off some Hot Tot products for the stylists to test. As I waited for the manager of each salon to have a few extra minutes, I reviewed their selections of children’s products. There isn’t an abundance of hair styling lines created for babies and children, though there are a few that are frequently available. When I began working on the Hot Tot line well over a year ago, I did a lot of research on chemicals that were harmful to humans (especially children). I hired an organic chemist to formulate each product, and then spent hours learning about the purpose and function of each ingredient from the Skin Deep Product and Ingredient Database. (This is a great resource for anyone curious about the products they are using as it allows users to input each ingredient and will provide a safety rating, the function of the ingredient, and links to research that have been done on each chemical [http://www.ewg.org/skindeep]). While I certainly don’t fancy myself a chemist, it was nice to read a label and quickly be able to determine if the styling product was safe and healthy for children. A year ago, I required a lot of note cards. It felt really good to comprehend something that once felt confusing and overwhelming and I was satisfied with my obvious progress. In the short period of time I spent examining the other brands, I noticed a few common themes: fruity scents, bright colors, and lots of polyethylene glycol.
Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is a cosmetic form of mineral oil used in personal care products to help retain moisture content by preventing the escape of water. In the U.S., the Occupational Safety and Health Administration requires a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for any potentially harmful substance. The MSDS for propylene glycol warns to avoid skin contact, as this strong skin irritant can cause liver abnormalities and kidney damage. In animal tests, birth defects and low sperm counts were noted. Propylene glycol has been found to provoke skin irritation and sensitization in humans when exposed to a concentration as low as 2%- the industry review panel recommends that cosmetics contain no more than 50% the substance (FYI: the four children’s pomades I examined all listed polyethylene glycol in the first three ingredients. Ingredients are listed in order of those most used to least, which means that the products I saw contained very high levels of propylene glycol.) Propylene glycol can also be found in automatic brake and hydraulic fluid, paint, industrial anti-freeze, and wallpaper stripper. Propylene glycol can be recognized on a product’s ingredient list as PEG (polyethylene glycol) or PPG (polypropylene glycol).
Studies have shown that PEG may increase a child’s likelihood of conditions such as asthma, rhinitis, and eczema. These conditions, often linked with allergies, increased between 50% and 180% when children were exposed to propylene glycol. 9.6% of American children have asthma, and is the most common chronic condition among children. Eczema is also on the rise- rates of children with eczema have doubled in a generation and today 10-20% of children are affected. With such clear and concrete information, I believe that parents are unaware of the effects the products they use on their children can produce. Just because something is marketed as “natural” or made for children does not mean that it actually is.
Hot Tot does not use propylene glycol, as our products truly were created with the health, safety and style of babies and children in mind. We believe that quality need not compromise safety. I am hopeful that caregivers will empower themselves with the information needed to make educated decisions regarding the products they choose for their little ones.

May 5, 2011Spotless Tot: Moving Forward
April 28, 2011I spent the morning working with a fantastic chemist. We reviewed the ingredients we will use in our baby hair and body wash (Spotless Tot) and I must say, I am very excited about adding such a great new product in the upcoming months. I have always known that a wash was a key element for the line, but omitted including it with the four introductory products because the formula wasn’t right. I truly believe that the final result will have been well worth the wait, and am confident that we have created something special and unique.
When I began learning about dangerous chemicals in children’s personal care products over a year ago, I felt overwhelmed by the information. Parents want to protect their children; for most, it is instinctive. I was confused by the research, as I assumed that our government would ban anything known to be harmful to humans. Not the case. The European Union has banned over 1,100 chemicals used in personal care products. The U.S has banned 9, and allows the 1,100 prohibited from European products to be used in the U.S. Today 1 in 3 American children has allergies, ADHD, autism or asthma. I was alarmed by such a sad statistic, and believe that we should examine why so many kids are suffering. Children’s bodies grow and develop more rapidly than those of adults, so harmful chemicals can do maximum damage at this critical time. Biological immaturity impairs a child’s ability to detoxify and excrete toxins, making them far more vulnerable to dangerous ingredients than adults. Caregivers can encourage the improvement of industry standards by supporting companies committed to safe and effective formulas.
I am excited to offer great products that assure safety. I hope that Hot Tot demonstrates that healthy products can perform well. I am looking forward to the completion of Spotless Tot, and anticipate it will be available at the beginning of July. More to come…

April 23, 2011Hot Tot [hot tot]
-noun
1. a confident and stylish youngster that gives to their neighbor and cares for our planet
2. a fabulous line of styling products created just for tots with safe and organic ingredients
I decided to define a “Hot Tot” as I helped my daughter study for the state spelling bee (she is a great speller!). As we spent hours reviewing the origin and meaning of a bazillion different words, I pondered my own definition of beauty. All too often, I think kids are misled into thinking that beauty is what the eye can see. I wanted to take a more holistic approach:
CONFIDENCE- Confidence enables us to live up to our full potential. People with confidence learn to trust their own judgment and are self-reliant.
STYLE- Often times, style indicates the presence of confidence. What a boring world it would be if we all looked the same! Variety is the spice of life
CHARITY- Kindness and generosity are key elements to true beauty.
AWARENESS- Awareness is power, and can evoke change that impacts everyone.
I am hopeful that the hairstyles created by our products bring a smile to many faces, and that the definition itself encourages parents to begin a dialogue with their children that will last a lifetime. I am a social worker at heart (also have an MSW), and wanted to incorporate those values into something lighthearted and fun. A baby’s personality emerges rather quickly, so why not give caregivers a styling tool to help them show the world who they are!? Hair products for children can help develop self-esteem from an early age, as the time it takes to use them can be spent discussing (and showing) youngsters just how special and important they truly are.

In the beginning…
April 14, 2011It isn’t uncommon for expectant parents to envision what their unborn child will be: their physical features, the contributions they will make, and the way the world will receive them. The creation of Hot Tot has been a similar experience for me. In the beginning, it was just an idea. Over the past year, I have watched that idea grown and develop into something more. The experience has had many parallels to motherhood. I have felt fearful, that perhaps I chose the wrong name. I have felt excited, that Hot Tot could potentially benefit many lives with charitable contributions to worthy causes. I have felt impatient, as the growth and development process seemed to last an eternity. I have felt uncertain, and considered the possibility that the world might not accept or understand my vision. I have felt happiness, as I am proud of what I have helped create.
Hot Tot has reminded me of the wonderful network of support I have in my life. My husband has been actively involved, and designed the logo and website in addition to photographing the products and tots for the ad campaign. I was overwhelmed by the kindness of other parents and their willingness to allow their children to sample the products and be photographed for my website (I posted an ad on local mommy-blogs and was flooded with willing participants). I am inspired by the goodness of others, and hope that I can pass such positivity along. Thank you to everyone who has been helpful and involved up to this point. I truly appreciate everything you’ve done
Over the past year, I have become very passionate about promoting safer products for babies and children. I have learned so much about the dangers that common products present and am excited to offer safe and fabulous options for caregivers. I am hopeful that Hot Tot will evoke many smiles and aid youngsters in feeling confident from the time they are small. I recognize the importance of kindness and an awareness for our planet, and am optimistic that others will assert the same when teaching their own little ones.
And so it began…
